does anyone have good tips for improving singing voice and confidence to sing in front of people?

i've never thought of myself as a great singer but i would really love to get better so i can feel good singing in front of people or just singing along to songs in my car. i would really love it if anyone had any tips or sites i could look at that could help me out!
ok i've been reading some answers and i think i should add that i am mostly asking for help on improving vocal quality as opposed to help with stage fright or something. i guess i was thinking that improving my singing would help me to sing more in front of people.

There are a few things that can help… but you're asking two different questions.

To be more comfortable singing in public, the only thing that will get you over it is to actually do it. Perhaps start out with a smaller audience and work your way up to bigger crowds. Singing in a choir is a decent tip too…. but don't rely on choral directors to give you a whole lot of vocal technique. Choral singing is a whole different style than solo singing. A few other things contribute to your public performance anxiety… your amount of preparation. The more you have practiced a song and the more securely you are memorized on lyrics and such the easier performing in public will be. Also, your muscles have a "muscle memory" and if you practice enough times sometimes your body will sorta go into auto-pilot and the muscle memory will kick in. One of the benefits of lots of rehearsal.

Hiring a private instructor is a definite plus. Your perception of your voice is altered because of the bones, muscle tissue, and cartilage between your mouth and ears. So someone who knows what healthy singing is will be able to listen to what you're doing and make improvements to make you more efficient.

haha i have the same problem of not being able to sing confidently. well, if its in front of a lot of people and you're not the only person, think of how the judges might feel, listening to all those people sing. keep telling yourself that it won't matter if you mess up a little bit. also ignoring the audience might help. sing a lot in the shower or when you're alone, when you can block out everything else. =] good luck!

Why don't you join a choir? Or hire a vocal coach.

Choirs are a lot of fun because you get to meet new people and sing in a large group, which builds confidence because you have other people around you. Plus, your choir teacher will most likely show you ways to sing correctly that you can use in the future.

Hiring a vocal coach is a good idea too. A vocal coach makes sure you're singing without hurting your vocal chords and also provides exercises to extend your vocal range. This way, you can sing in higher and lower octaves with more ease.

My suggestion would be to get a vocal coach! Soon you and your family can enjoy your beautiful voice.

    Good luck!

Confidence is obviously the biggest issue here. To help with confidence in singing, voice lessons could be essential. Once you learn what it feels like when you're singing correctly and when you're not, you'll know what it feels like when you sound good. Also-if you can manage it, go to a karaoke bar in a nearby town (where you won't know anyone), and sing your heart out. If you keep in mind that you'll never see those people again, and that they are THERE to listen to amateurs sing, it will make it a lot easier for you to let go. One of the most important aspects of singing in a healthy and effective manner is muscle relaxation, so once you can let go of muscle tension from nerves, you'll get even better. I'll give you a little tip I gave to the kids I used to teach: On high notes, or notes you just have trouble hitting for some reason, clench your butt muscles together. It sounds weird, but it takes muscle tension concentration out of the throat (where you do NOT want it). I hope you find your voice :)
