Normal Quality

Q             How does one go about establishing normal or bell quality?

A             Part of any singing lesson, especially for beginners, is to establish the basis for the conception of what the normal or “bell” quality sounds like. Listening to the voices of artists or others who are accepted as good singers is one approach. Then the student must have a teacher who knows what to listen for. By a process of trial and error the teacher must lead the student into what is called an even scale of normal quality, in terms of the singer’s vocal identity.

Q       What do you mean by that?

A      The singer should sound like himself instead of like an imitation of some one else.   This may be called “placing the voice.”

Q      I thought placing the voice meant putting it some place, such as in the head, or forward to the teeth.

A      It is impossible to place the voice in that way, since sensations of placement will vary with different vowel sounds, different pitches, different degrees of loudness, or different ranges of the voice.

Q      How do you go about tuning the resonators to the vibrations of the vocal cords?

A    The first approach, as mentioned, is to establish a conception of what is good quality. It is also possible to shape the resonators through lip positions, or different size openings of the mouth, or different positions of the soft palate.

Q     Do you mean that the position of the lips can affect vocal quality?

A      Very definitely. For example, a smiling position of the lips has an effect not only on quality but also on the action of the vocal cords. The result is a more metallic tone. A relaxed or closed puckered position of the lips tends to muffle the tone. The vocal cords are more relaxed. The open puckered or bell-like position of the lips tends to make the tone sound more mellow, and at the same time to have the quality of projection. The vocal cords tune themselves more easily to the production of normal quality or bell resonance with this position.

Q    What have the other physical processes - respiration and articulation -to do with the proper tuning of the resonators with the action of the vocal cords or phonation?

A      They are a part of the co-ordinated action resulting in a particular tone quality. Breathing for singing calls for a different type of breathing than just breathing naturally. Both singing and speech call for a more forceful type of breath flow. Articulation, the basis of a singing speech must be produced in the normal quality.

Acoustics has been defined as the science of auditory vibrations. It has also been defined as the qualities of a room or theater that determine how well a sound can be heard.w

What a singer knows about acoustics is generally limited to what he has learned through experience. Eventually he becomes aware that some places are easier to sing in than others. What he unconsciously listens for when he sings is a reflection of how his voice is sounding. This reflection is called reverberation, which may be defined as a reflection of sound waves in a confined area.w The length of time that a sound can be heard in a closed area is called the reverberation time of that area. When applied to Free Singing Lessons Online, if the reverberation time of a room is too short, that is, if the sound waves die out too quickly, then the singer’s voice will sound lifeless and non-re son -ant to him and to the audience. If the reverberation time is too long, that is, if the sound waves keep sounding, then the singer’s voice will sound too live, and interfere with the sounds coming after. An optimum reverberation time, which will vary with the size of a room or theater and the character of the walls and furnishings, will be the most satisfying to the performer and to the audience.64

There is usually no reverberation in outdoor singing where loud sounds are quickly dissipated. In cases like these, the singer wonders if his voice carries. In small rooms with hard surfaces there is usually too much reverberation. Here the singer may well get the impression that he is better than he actually is. The most satisfactory situation is where the singer’s voice fits the optimum reverberation time of the room or theater. Here the singer’s vocal production will seem to be effortless.

In some instances it is possible to control poor acoustical conditions by sound reflectors and public address systems. Through the use of these aids a singer can learn to adjust his voice to fit the conditions, or depend on those operating the controls to do so.

Im trying to take singing lessons to get a record deal. What do record compainies look for in a demo?

This is my dream. To be an R&B singer. I want Chris Brown and whoever to have some serious competition, and i want to be a big success.

Oh dear. The record industry is nearly impossible to get into and record companies will NEVER hear your demo if you send it to them. This is a business of connections and knowing the right people. You really need an agent (hard to get) and a list of other assets. Your chances are slim and the idea you want to be a "big success" is laughable, as most people never attain that in the recording industry. Are you interested in singing or just being a big success? You have miles and miles to go down a road that I suspect will not lead youwhere you want to go. Good luck!

What kind of singing lessons should a beginner take?

I'm 13 and I've been singing since I was 5 (Not professionally, just for fun) I would really love to improve my singing but I'm not sure what type of lessons I should take. I've been told by a few people in my choir class that I should do a solo but I never did. I really want to improve my range most of all. So what kind should I start taking? Thanks! =]

Keep trying chior, even into your highschool years.
Trust me it gets a bit harder and it would do wonders or your voice, basicaly they'd teach you new things. Plus you're still growing, so your voice is gonna change as time passes.

If you REALLY want to go for major range improval look for a good voice coach in your area. Its gonna cost you, but like i said, only if you really feel the need to.

how much do singing lessons help your voice?

I just finished my school's 8th grade musical (everyone had to do it) and realized I liked being in the musical better than some of my previous plays. But my voice is just okay (it doesn't suck but it's not amazing) so how much do you think lessons would help?

Before I started taking music lessons, I would have trouble with not singing loud enough, breathing correctly, not pronouncing the words and vowels well, But I was still a good singer. But now that I have started taking lessons (almost a year) my vocals have become much better! Lessons helped me a lot because I now know all of the techniques to becoming a better singer. So I would say, just try lessons out for maybe a month or two, and if you feel good about it, continue. Lessons have helped me a lot!

How many hours of singing lessons would it take me to become decent?

Nearly two years ago, I took a trip out to Vancouver with my current roommate to view his hometown. We went to his grandmother's house for dinner one night, and his great uncle from Germany was there. Sometime during the middle of the dinner, he told me I had an astounding voice and that if i lived in Germany he would hunt me down until I joined his symphony choir or something like that. I dont know exactly what he said, as my roommate grandmother did all the translating. Anyway, I get daily comments from everyone and anyone concerning my voice. Whether it's a great sounding voice, or I should be on the radio or something like that.

I'm thinking in my spare time in the future of taking some singing lessons. How many hours of singing lessons would it take to become decent? Good? Very Good?

it wouldn't be hrs. it would be years of daily practice but worth it

How long does it take for you to get better with Singing Lessons?

OK, so I have taken about 7 singing lessons, and since all we've done is breathing, I'm really not feeling too much better about my voice. I'm not an AMAZING singer, but I really feel that if I work HARD I can become good. Is that true? Also, how long will it take to become better with lessons? Will it never happen no matter how hard I try? Thanks!

I'm basically just agreeing with everything said above. It's all about patience. Also, a good singer never stops practising. I know people who have been singing professionally for years, and still take lessons. Even when you get it down to an art, you need to keep it there.

The most important aspect of singing is breathing. Honestly. I just graduated from college, taking music. I was a vocal major, my entire two years, the first half of my private lesson every week was breathing, and finding my diaphram, finding my support in songs that exist entirely on my break and etc.

Just keep it up, if you honestly give it a go, you WILL see improvement. I think the most important thing though, is to not rush it, take your time, and enjoy it. Music is about constantly improving and refinding yourself.

Where can i find opera singing lessons?

I'm between age 15-18 and have always love singing opera.. It has been a dream of mine since i was 5 i wanted to be a professional opera singer, like Renee Fleming and Maria Callas..etc..

Could someone give me some web site address for some weekend classes, or private vocal tutoring with registered teachers… I have been search for like 3 months, but haven't had any luck.

Could someone help?

Hi, I've been singing opera for many years professionally, hope this will help. Most good teachers advise it is unwise to train a voice classically before the age of 18. This is because the cartillage which your voice box (larynx) is made of will not mature until then and permanent damage can be done if you are not careful. If you are under 18, you would be wise to take singing lessons privately with a proper qualified teacher (beware bad teachers, they can cause irreparable damage to a voice) who will not push your voice for your age. Phone the Incorporated Society of Musicians on 020 7629 4413 or check out www.ism.org to find a qualified, recommended teacher in your area. After that, to be taken seriously in opera, you will need to get into one of the big music colleges and do a degree or performance diploma in singing. This is because eventually you will need a CV and opera companies will judge your CV on the prestigiousness of the college you went to. However, this is incredibly expensive, fees can be thousands of pounds a year more than a normal university course. Don't forget there are many other things you will need to master as an opera singer - some fluency in Italian, French, German and another language such as Czech or Russian is usually necessary, and you will need to learn to act to a professional standard and possibly become reasonably good on the piano. Learning to read music to degree level is a must. At the end of all that, there is very little work in opera and competition is fierce, I still spend a few hundred pounds a month of my own money on singing lessons (good teachers charge around £60-£80 an hour in London) coaching sessions with pianists (around £40 an hour) and private language lessons (around £25 an hour). Unfortunately its often the wealthy that succeed! Hope that helps, if you are determined, then never give up, whatever anyone else says!

I won a years worth of singing lessons and still have not received them do do I have any legal rights?

I entred a talent competition tht was advertised all over town and won a years worth of singing lessons worth £1040. 3 months later the music school has "closed for relocation" still havent had 1 lesson, do I have any right to demand the money to pay for lessons else where?
is there anyone out there that can answer me?

You can sue them for breach of contract for the amount of 1040 pounds as it was a legally enforceable contract. Just find any good lawyer and u will definitely win the case as long as there is documents to support ur case.
